After four years in the design and approval phase, Dynamic Excavating took the McDonough Dental parking lot project through permitting, road closures, and traffic control before breaking ground. We tapped into the municipal storm sewer main and constructed a full underground storm system with five structures – an oil and grit separator to protect downstream water quality, a vortex flow control structure to manage discharge rates, an inspection port and catch basin combination, and two additional catch basins for lot drainage. Curbing was installed using a curb machine and granular base was brought to grade in preparation for paving.
The project presented a significant subsurface challenge. Crews encountered buried tree stumps and the remnants of an old residential structure beneath the site – conditions that required immediate geotechnical intervention. Soil-Mat was engaged to assess and resolve the instability. The solution involved recompacting native fill in controlled lifts, filling stump voids with granular material, excavating the subgrade an additional 450mm, and importing rip-rap to stabilize the base before overlaying with geotextile fabric and beginning granular placement. The project is substantially complete and scheduled for paving by mid-June.
